Lollapalooza ’96 @ Winnebago City Fairgrounds 6/30/96

This was the second & last time I ever attended Lollapalooza.  I know, that’s very sad.  For this year, the promoters took the show out of Chicago and brought it to a more rural setting in Rockford, Illinois. It was definitely a hike & a half.  It was worth it for the most part, except for the fact that I developed a horrible Summer cold pretty much as soon as we got there.  I could feel something coming on as we drove, but it hit me HARD by the time we arrived at the fairgrounds.  You can imagine how upset I was, when all I wanted to do was ROCK!! This is the line-up we went for…

  • Metallica
  • Soundgarden
  • Rancid
  • Shaolin Monks
  • Screaming Trees
  • Cocteau Twins
  • Waylon Jennings
  • The Tea Party
  • Wu Tang Clan
  • Steve Earle
  • DEVO
  • 311
  • Ben Folds Five
  • Beth Hart Band
  • Cornershop
  • Fireside
  • Girls Against Boys
  • Jonny Polonsky
  • The Melvins
  • Ruby
  • Satchel
  • Soul Coughing
  • Sponge
  • You Am I
  • Capsize 7
  • Chune
  • The Cows
  • Moonshake
  • Lutefisk
  • Long Fin Killie
  • Thirty Ought Six
  • Varnaline
  • Crumb

Now I’m not sure if it was because I was feeling like crap or because I was once again in a group situation, but not everything about this day is completely clear.  For example, I’m not 100% sure of all the bands I saw.  In fact, I’m not sure if we even went to the second stage or if we just hung by the main stage.  I also don’t know which bands played on what stage.  But here’s who I do remember seeing:  Metallica, Soundgarden, Ramones, Rancid, & Cheap Trick.  I might have seen Violent Femmes??  The one thing that stands out the most vividly in my memory is Metallica.  My best friend’s little sister was a diehard Metallica fan.  She entertained me almost as much as the band did.  She literally knew every word to every song and was not only singing along, but punching the air & punctuating every line of every song!  It was a beautiful thing to behold.  I freakin’ loved it!!  And of course, I joined in on the songs I knew.    This was their amazing set list:

  1. So What
(Anti-Nowhere League cover)
  2. Creeping Death
  3. Sad but True
  4. Ain’t My Bitch
  5. Whiplash
  6. Fade to Black
  7. King Nothing
  8. One
  9. Until It Sleeps
  10. For Whom the Bell Tolls
  11. Wherever I May Roam
  12. Nothing Else Matters
  13. Enter Sandman
  14. Encore:
  15. Last Caress
(Misfits cover)
  16. Master of Puppets
(Short Version)
  17. Overkill
(Motörhead cover)

The other incredible performance came from Soundgarden.  What a treat to be able to see them again.  Even though I was suffering, I still managed to enjoy them.  And finally I got my “Outshined”…and then some!!   YAY!!

  1. Spoonman
  2. Searching With My Good Eye Closed
  3. Let Me Drown
  4. Flower
  5. Pretty Noose
  6. Burden in My Hand
  7. Ty Cobb
  8. Fell on Black Days
  9. Rusty Cage
  10. Waiting for the Sun
(The Doors cover)
  11. Black Hole Sun
  12. Outshined
  13. Rhinosaur
  14. Drawing Flies
  15. Jesus Christ Pose

This day was fun, but it was definitely a struggle for me because of my cold.  I was dying by the end of the night.  All I wanted was my bed & a box of kleenex.  I wish it would’ve played out differently, but I’m glad that I had the chance to be a part of one more Lolla.

  1. Joe Danberg says:

I remember it being hell hot and humid maybe 100 degrees that day with 99% humidity. Snuck in a pack of joints, got in the pit for Rancid and Metallica. Great day and show except for that heat!!

All I remember about that day is coming down with a horrible cold. I could not truly enjoy myself because of this. 🙁 Summer colds are the WORST!!

  2. Rich says:

I was there. Remember James Hetfield stopping mid song because people were throwing water bottles at him. One nailed him and he said something vulgar to the people throwing it. Pretty cool show.
