5/7/94…Nine Inch Nails @ Riviera Theater, Chicago

Val & I after the show. 5/7/94

Val & I after the show.
5/7/94

Two big smiles for two very proud young ladies.  Val & I never bothered to buy tickets to this sold-out show, but we were determined to go.  So, like any two headstrong women, we went down to the venue at show time, Val offered a $20 payoff from each of us to the lady working the door (who easily accepted), and let us in to The Riv with a smile.  Val & I laughed the whole time we ran in.  We could not believe we had pulled it off.  Especially because the last time we had tried it with Counting Crows, it didn’t play out as well.  It was fantastic!  We got into the theater just as NIN was starting.  The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.  We ran up to the front of the stage and started dancing our butts off.  We literally never stopped dancing throughout the entire show.  I almost think we enjoyed it more because we had pulled off a solid caper.  Nice job.  This was my first time seeing Nine Inch Nails and the show really wowed me.  Val had just seen them prior to this show and had met one of the touring band members.   Check out this set list:

  1. Pinion
  2. Terrible Lie
  3. Sin
  4. March of the Pigs
  5. Something I Can Never Have
  6. Closer
  7. Reptile
  8. Wish
  9. Suck
(Pigface cover)
  10. The Only Time
  11. Get Down, Make Love
(Queen cover)
  12. Down In It
  13. Big Man With a Gun
  14. Head Like a Hole
  15. Encore:
  16. Dead Souls
(Joy Division cover)
  17. Help Me I Am in Hell
  18. Happiness in Slavery

Pretty sweet, huh?  After the show was over, we walked over to the side of the stage and tried to persuade security to get the band member Val had met to come out for us.  All the sweet talking she did was wasted on this guard.  This ended up being our failed attempt to get backstage because the security guard did NOT want to help us…and didn’t.  Oh well, we shrugged it off.  We had just got into a sold out show and had paid less than the ticket price to get in.  So no complaints.  It was a great night!

I remember catching a key after trent raked his boot down the keybed of one of his keyboards up at the front of the stage and going absolutely insane like I had won the lottery or something because I caught it. I held that thing close to my chest as the last time I had caught something at the riviera (a drumstick at an alice in chains show) I had it wrestled out of my grasp and almost had my damn finger torn off in the process.
