4/30/93…Goo Goo Dolls @ Metro, Chicago

Goo Goo Dolls & Metro 4/30/93

Oh yeah, Goo Goo Dolls!  Superstar Carwash was released in February 1993.  Nearly from the moment I heard the first single, We Are The Normal, I was hooked!!  When my friends & I found out they were playing the Metro (our new favorite venue) in April, we were so down to go.  We loved the idea of a general admission show in a smaller venue that allowed us to get close to the stage.  And we were definitely close.  In fact, when they played the song, Hey, I got to grab Mr. Rzeznik’s leg.  At about the 2:29 mark you can see him sit up on the monitor in front of the stage.  It became a sort of “touch Johnny free-for-all.”  That made my entire night.  As you’ll see in the video, he was at his hottest during this era.  And he looked beyond adorable for this show.  The one thing that surprised me & my friends was how much Robby (bassist) actually sang.  I guess, after seeing the video for “We Are The Normal”, we figured it was all Johnny, but that obviously wasn’t the case.  At the end of the show, George (drummer) tossed one of his drumsticks onto the stage.  I tried asking the security guard (seen in the video) to grab it for me.  But he just smirked at me and ignored me.  I was like, really?  So I literally boosted myself onto the stage, snagged the drumstick, and jumped back down.  I was happy.

I actually went back and purchased a couple of their older albums after this show just to get more familiar with the rest of their music.  It was almost night & day with their current music. Overall, I absolutely enjoyed this show immensely.

Hey! I came across this searching for odd Goo Goo Dolls stuff. I don’t know if you know this but that show was professionally recorded by JBTV in Chicago and some dude uploaded the whole show on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLD85F2B57D0D1B882 You can also see a crystal clear version of “We Are the Normal” here: http://www.jbtvonline.com/performances/goo-goo-dolls-we-are-normal – My first GGD show was on June 4th of the same year. I am going to see them for the 24th time on June 25th (2013) and 25th time on 8/18. – Kev
