New Order with Sugarcubes & PIL @ Poplar Creek 6/30/89

Not only was this my first show at Poplar Creek, but it was my first outdoor experience sitting on the lawn.  It was so much fun.  A bunch of my girlfriends and I hooked up for the show, which made it that much more enjoyable.  We were strictly there for New Order.  Their new album Technique had just come out and I couldn’t wait to hear some of those songs along with their older stuff.  They were a band that I actually started getting into in High School.  I know, I know…I actually did listen to music other than Menudo.     The two opening bands were truly of no interest to me.  Although, after Björk left the Sugarcubes, I definitely became a fan of hers.  PIL really turned me off.  I am not a Johnny Lydon fan at all.  In fact, I was so annoyed by this band that I started calling them PIS and I started a full-on food fight on the lawn.  No joke.  I tossed a piece of my soft pretzel ahead of me on the lawn.  And then little by little I started seeing the lawn explode in flying food.  It seemed that everyone on the lawn started throwing food.  WOW!!  I was dying laughing. The only reason I even started throwing food was because I was so bored of PIL.  I never thought it would start a food war!  By the time New Order came on stage, I was more than ready for them.  That brought me and my friends to our feet and we just danced the rest of the night.  So much fun!!  I’m including a set list from this show.  It’s obvious they played to their audience.

Wow! I saw this concert at the meadowlands in NJ. Drove up from Albany w friends. Primarily for New Order, which were horrible in my opinion. Bernard Summer can’t sing. Very disappointing. But I’ve seen them several times since then and they’ve been great. Maybe because I’ve seen them in smaller venues. I actually tickets for them in the DC area in September, if the health crisis allows the concert to go on. Great memories.

I don’t remember that Bernard Sumner sounded bad. My friends and I loved the show and danced our asses off! 🙂
