6/23/12…Shakey Graves @ Hole In The Wall

Hole In The Wall

Hole In The Wall

Friday was a friend from work’s last day working with us.  After 9 months, he decided to leave the hotel and move on to bigger and better things.  I told him we would “celebrate” his departure by going to a show and I would pick out something good.  In my search for a show I randomly checked to see if Shakey Graves was playing anywhere on Saturday night.  I was soo happy & excited to find that indeed, he was…at Hole In The Wall, no less.  I have been to Hole In The Wall before, but it had been literally YEARS!!  So I was looking forward to the night overall.  The only drawback was that it was a midnight performance and I had to work pretty early the next morning.  Oh well, I thought it would definitely be worth the sacrifice.  And I was RIGHT!  One of my most favorite things to do is to introduce people to new music and have them fall in love with it.  I know when I first saw Shakey at Mean-Eyed Cat, I was sold on him pretty much immediately.  He is just so talented; it kinda blows me away.  And as my friend said, “he’s super coordinated!”  Can you even imagine standing up playing guitar & singing, all while tapping out beats with BOTH of your feet??  UGH!  I don’t think so.  And even more than that, this guy sings from his heart.  His voice is amazing and the sheer power of it caused every vein on his neck to pop out.  He is a true story-teller and if you take the time to listen to his lyrics, he will lure you into his road travels.  His performance last night was a little more energetic than the first one I had seen.

The one major difference is that he was standing up during this performance, while at Mean-Eyed Cat he had sat down on his suitcase the whole time.  If you have no idea what I’m talking about, check out my previous blog about Shakey for a better description of what you can expect from one of his live shows:  Shakey Graves @ Mean-Eyed Cat.   I think he may have pumped up the energy for this show because of the venue and the crowd.  Hole In The Wall is in the college part of town and has more of a college age crowd, but not necessarily a college crowd.  This crowd last night was definitely there and excited for him.  Shakey really fed off of their energy and had a great old-time up there, delivering birthday songs, accepting friendly drink offerings, and changing up his lyrics to suit the moment.  He also dealt with some technical difficulties with a ton of humor.  I was so happy to see the entire audience, including my friend and new Shakey fan, getting into the performance.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…Shakey Graves is one to watch.  He delivers an authentic, heartfelt, energetic, and powerful show.  His music is really incredible.  This guy is definitely going somewhere!!  And if you’re smart, you’ll follow.

Hole In The Wall

So despite its name, I would have to say that Hole In The Wall is anything  but. The front area of the bar has a small stage, booths, tables  and is also where the main bar is located.  This bar is located in the college part of  town, but there is definitely a mix of people.  It has a grungy feel to it, but is such a great time.  The staff is SUPER friendly…THANKS Dennis and Ago for being so cool.   Bands play here every night and there is no cover unless otherwise indicated on their MySpace page.  There is also a large outside terrace with picnic tables, pool table and a large bar  for all the smokers or those with dogs.  The back area of the inside bar has a 2nd stage, pool table, pinball machine and another large bar.  I had a great time here.
